The Auld Lang Syne by Robert Burns

Burns Night 2017Robert Burns was a great poet and lyricist from Scotland. He wrote a lot of masterpiece poems and songs which are considered to be one of the best to have ever been made. For this reason, the legacy of Robert Burns is being paid tribute every January 25 on a special occasion called the Robbie Burns day. During this day, people celebrate by conducting various fun activities like having a fancy dinner made from the Haggis, poem recitals, and singing of songs. Haggis Traditions on the Burns Supper: Piping and Addressing

A very popular work by Robert Burns is the song called the Auld Lang Syne. This song is so popular that the Guinness Book of World Records list this song as the third most popular song in the world just behind the song entitled Happy Birthday and another song in second place. The song is being sang usually at New Year’s Eve. It is also the main song of the Burns supper. The lyrics of this song is shown below:

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,

And never brought to mind?

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,

And auld lang syne!

CHORUS:

For auld long syne, my dear,

For auld long syne,

We’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,

For auld lang syne.

However, there are speculations that Robert Burns was not actually the original writer or composer of this song. This might be true because the song itself is included in one of Robert Burns’ books called the collection of Scottish folk songs. He noted that he took the song from an old man. Toasting on a Burns Night Celebration

Even if Robert Burns did not write or compose the Auld Lang Syne, he was still the main reason why such a song is very much alive until now and has become a traditional song. If he did not keep a record of such song, then it may not have become as popular as it is right now.

Regardless of whether or not Burns composed the Auld Lang Syne, he is still a great poet and lyricist. He wrote the very popular poems A Red, Red Rose and To a Mouse which are being studied as fine literary pieces in literature subjects.
